The Therapy Center has four mental health professionals that offer counseling, life coaching, education, and psychotherapy. Dr. Carol Houston is a licensed psychologist and does testing, assessment, individual, family, and group counseling. John Garwood is a licensed professional counselor that is on most Medicaid panels and most major insurance plans. He sees families, couples, and individuals. Kay West is a licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist. The practice of Cathy Armstrong offers the Corpus Christi area a Holistic Study Group, an advanced and clinical practice of mind/body psychotherapy and education for Fertility and Pregnancy Management. As a Registered Nurse and Psychotherapist with a Doctorate in Holistic Life Counseling she offers both educational classes and stress relief sessions for pregnant teens and adults. Preparing your body, mind, and spirit is vital to creating a positive atmosphere that will encourage the healthiest physical, emotional, and psychological development of your child. Through pregnancy and parenting, infant development and perinatal mental health education, Cathy is here to help you experience, understand, and enjoy the journey into motherhood. Many of the therapists at The Therapy Center are on most insurance plans. OB Patients with high risk pregnancies can attend a 5 week, 2 hour program or attend weekly 45 minute outpatient counseling sessions to learn to make better decisions, positively manage stress, develop new coping skills, learn relaxation techniques and gain better control over personal and family stress that have a negative impact on their health and emotional wellbeing. At the Therapy Center we see OB Patients for anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and stress associated with pregnancy related health complications. Cathy Armstrong offers Childbirth Express Classes on a monthly basis to help you learn about the birth of your baby. The fee is $85.00. She offers other childbirth classes for birth using hypnosis and deep focused relaxation. Those classes are $45.00 for each 45 minute session. She has been a childbirth education for over 25 years and had been a labor support person for over 300 births in Texas. If you have Medicaid and are interested in having a less stressful and anxious pregnancy, calls us and see if you qualify for mental health services. Most Medicaid plans cover individual and family counseling. If you come to our center for counseling you may qualify for Free Childbirth Classes.
About Dr. Armstrong
Cathy Armstrong, RN, PhD is a psychotherapist that sees clients for prenatal and postpartum mentoring and support in Corpus Christi, Texas. She trains interns and other mental health professionals in prenatal, postpartum, and infertility counseling. She created her own model for an easier childbirth experience and teaches natural childbirth classes in a private practice setting. She has taught childbierth education in the past at local hospitals and other community settings. She has offered continuing education hours for mental health professionals on the emotional needs of women and couples during the childbearing year. She has written articles for South Texas Woman’s World on pregnancy and childbirth. Dr. Armstrong is a board certified clinical hypnotherapist, certified holistic weight loss instructor and sees women during pregnancy for issues as: morning sickness, breech baby turning, imagery for natural labor induction, and hypnosis birthing.
Dr. Cathy Armstrong is a pregnancy coach/mentor, maternal/child nurse, and perinatal wellness consultant. She has been working in the field of maternal/child care since 1974. She was trained and certified by the HypnoBirthing Institue and The LeClaire Method of Hypnosis for Childbirth. She is board certified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Registered Nurse and later went to graduate school and achieved advanced degrees in the mental health field and in religious studies and holistic care. She became an Ordained Non-Denominational Minister when her many of her patients were reaching for Spiritual Guidance and were looking to her for answers they could not find from their home church pastors. Her educational background is in holistic studies, theology, nursing education, counseling education, and clinical hypnotherapy. Her dissertation examined outcomes of chronic illness when using various Holistic Life Counseling models of therapy as an adjunct to medical care. She was a school nurse for pregnancy teens for many years and found her work with teen moms satisfying.

We at The Therapy Center see many pregnant, postpartum, and new families for concerns such as: birth trauma, grief and infant loss, fear and acceptance of pregnancy, pre-birth bonding issues, teen pregnancy and parenting, relationship issues, parenting concerns, baby blues and postpartum depression.

and education though the both the Grief Recovery Program and The Therapy Center.
Childbirth Education Classes
Call to see how you may qualify for free Childbirth Classes or be placed on a sliding fee scale for childbirth preparation classes. These are general information classes and are separate from the Hypnosis and Natural Birthing Classes. Classes are offered to pregnant clients attending counseling sessions, nutrition classes, and mother-baby bonding classes at The Therapy Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
